Description: In 2001, Pakistan announced the construction of a new deep-sea port in Gwadar region which comes in two phases. The first phase was completed in 2005. The Gwadar port played a significant role in the socio-economic development of Pakistan in general, and Gwadar region in particular. There is, however, no academic research on the economic, social and environmental impacts of this Gwadar Port. The general objective of this research was to study the economic impact of the construction of the Gwadar Port on the Gwadar Region. The specific objectives of this study were. Analyze the economic impact of the Gwadar port, focusing on, industrial development, employment and output. Analyze the socio-economic impact of the Gwadar Port on the population, with focus on household income, employment opportunities and business opportunities. Examine the impact of Gwadar port on environment. This study collected primary data using in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys on a sample size of 500 respondents, who were divided into 3 groups (Citizens, Authority and Business owners) using random sampling method. Secondary data are collected from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). These data were analyzed using trend and descriptive analysis. The results revealed that Gwadar Port had both positive and negative impact on the Gwadar region. There was a 14.9 percent increase in employment rate from year 2009 to 2010 as compared to the 7 percent between years 1999 to 2000. The study also revealed an average 6.67 percent increase in income for employees working under the port or port related activities, an increase in revenue of the port, an increase in the profit of business owners operating in the port, and a small effect on industrial output. The port development had a negative impact on the environment, as reflected by the presence of water, air, land and noise pollution. Such results indicate that significant inroads should be made by government authorities in order to preserve the quality of the environment, while increasing the benefits from the development of the Gwadar port.,Master / Sarjana
