Issue Date: | 13-May-2011 |
Description: | After the birth of Genetically Modified (GM) foods, the world is faced with a lot of concerns and debates over the human health and safety issues. Consumers have their own reservations and are not assured about the safety of GM foods. In addition, countries have different regulatory approaches towards GM foods especially related to labelling. While In the United States, there are no mandatory labelling requirements in place, Europeans have implemented strict labelling requirements. The focus of this thesis is on Malaysian legal approach towards labelling of genetically modified foods followed by looking at the EU and the United States policies towards labelling. A survey is also conducted with 132 Malaysians to ask their opinions about GM foods and find out a general view on their level of awareness about these foods. Data is collected though the books, articles, statutes, regulations, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and websites. This thesis will apply a qualitative approach in processing all the data. Content analysis method is also applied in analysing the laws related to labelling. Comparative approach is also used to do comparative analysis between the regulations in the EU, Malaysia and the USA. The findings reveal that even if Malaysia has adopted precautionary approach towards GM foods by requiring mandatory labelling for all GM foods in the Biosafety Act 2007, there are still some loopholes in Malaysian laws relating to labelling of GM foods. In addition, the result of the interview indicates that Malaysians' awareness about GM foods is not high.,“Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis” is not available,Master Law |
