Description: A series of bis(thiourea) derivatives were successfully synthesized by the reaction of aroylisothiocyanate with ethylenediamine and phenylhydrazine. Nine new bis(thiourea) derivatives with ethane as linkager namely 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(benzoyl)thiourea] (I), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(4-chlorobenzoyl)thiourea] (II), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(2-bromobenzoyl)thiourea] (III), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(4-bromobenzoyl)thiourea] (IV), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(2-iodobenzoyl)thiourea] (V), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(3-flourobenzoyl)thiourea] (VI), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(2-methylbenzoyl)thiourea] (VII), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(4-methylbenzoyl)thiourea] (VIII), 1,1`-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[3-(4-tert-butylbenzoyl)thiourea] (IX), were obtained and characterized by spectroscopic techniques including NMR. Seven out of nine bis(thiourea) were obtained in crystalline form. Chemical crystallographic study supported the characterization and analytical data. In contrast, the reaction of the aroylisothiocyanate (4-methoxybenzoylisothiocyanate, 2-chlorobenzoylisothiocyanate, 2-iodobenzoylisothiocyanate, 4-nitrobenzoylisothiocyanate and 4-tert-butylbenzoylisothiocyanate) with phenylhydrazine did not give bis(thiourea) but instead triazole and triazolidin namely 5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (X), (2-chlorophenyl)(3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-5-thioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl)methanone(XI), (3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-5-thioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl)(2-idophenyl)methanone (XII), (Z)-4-(tert-butyl)-N-(5,5-dimethyl-3-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolidin-2-ylidene)benzamide (XIII) and N-(5,5-dimethyl-3-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolidin-2-ylidene)-4-nitrobenzamide (XIV) respectively.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
