dc.description | The subfamily Idolothripinae Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) is a group of fungal spore-feeding thrips that worldwide includes about 700 species. Most of these species occur in tropical habitats, particularly in the wet tropics, and they have been little studied apart from descriptive taxonomy that is based mainly on specimens collected opportunistically. This study, based on targeted collecting of one particular habitat - newly dead branches with hanging dead leaves, endeavours to produce an understanding and identification system for this insect group in Peninsular Malaysia. More than 600 microscope slides were prepared as part of the study. A total of 17 genera and 36 species have been recorded for Peninsular Malaysia, of these 11 genera and 23 species were collected in this study. Elaphrothrips procer Schmutz is newly recorded from this area, one Machatothrips Bagnall is probably an undescribed species, and two species of Ethirothrips Karny cannot be identified. To maximise the value of the identification key due to predicted similarities in the thrips fauna across large areas of Southeast Asia, an identification key is generated to 31 genera of Idolothripinae recorded from the entire Southeast Asian region between Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines. Notes pertaining to diversity and habitat are given for each of the 17 genera recorded from Peninsular Malaysia, followed by generic diagnoses in the form of distinctive morphological characteristics. Identification keys to species are provided to 26 species of seven genera, with comments on intraspecific variations that cause taxonomic and identification problems. It is concluded from variation among these recently collected samples that the species taxonomy in some genera, such as Dinothrips, Elaphrothrips and Machatothrips, is not as straight forward as the available literature suggests.,Subfamili Idolothripinae Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) adalah kumpulan thrip pemakan spora kulat, yang mempunyai kira-kira 700 spesies di seluruh dunia.
