Description: | The purpose of this study is to produce a pH sensitive poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel reinforced with CNC with superior mechanical stability. CNC was extracted from kenaf fibre through a series of alkali and bleaching treatments followed by acid hydrolysis. Alkaline treatment was carried out using 4 wt% NaOH aqueous solution followed by bleaching treatment with acetic acid buffer solution and 1.7 wt% NaClO2 aqueous solution. A micro size kenaf cellulose will then undergo hydrolysis reaction with 65 wt% sulphuric acid solution to produce CNC. The acrylic acid (AA) was then subjected to chemical cross-linking using the cross-linking agent (N,N-methylenebisacrylamide) with CNC entrapped in PAA matrix. The weight percent of CNC was varied to 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in order to study the effect of CNC concentration of hydrogel's characteristics. The mixture was casted onto petri dish to obtain film shape hydrogel. The hydrogel were then subjected to FTIR analysis to confirm the cross-linking reaction. The effect of CNC concentration towards the crystallinity of the hydrogels produced were analysed using XRD. Swelling test was conducted to study the responsiveness of hydrogel towards changes in pH and temperature. Rheological behaviour and the pore size of the freeze-dried hydrogel was studied using rheometer and SEM respectively. Thermal stability of the hydrogel were studied by using thermogravimetric analyser. Potential of hydrogels produced as drug carrier were then evaluated by running drug encapsulation efficiency test and drug release profiling test by using theophylline as model drug. The missing of C=C peak at 1615 cm-1 in FTIR spectrum proves that acrylic acid had polymerized into poly(acrylic acid) while XRD showed increase in crystallinity with addition of CNC and thus causing the hydrogel to become more rigid. Swelling test showed the hydrogel obtained maximum swelling at pH 7 and 37°C while rheology test showed supreme increase in storage modulus of hydrogel with increase of CNC content. The storage modulus of hydrogel had increased 1200 Pa with incorporation of 25% CNC compared to pure PAA hydrogel. Morphology study showed that the pore size of hydrogel reduced with increasing of CNC content due to low swelling ratio caused by gel rigidity that obstruct water penetration into the hydrogel network. On the other hand, TGA analysis showed increase in thermal stability in hydrogel with increase of CNC content.,Master/Sarjana |
