The dispersion of suspended solids in the river plume is caused by various ocean physical factors and circulations that influence the plume distribution. The content of suspended solid could affect the photic depth in the water column and eventually controls the rate of productivity of the marine organism. This study aims to identify plume's horizontal and vertical distribution at Pahang River estuary during different monsoonal season including the factors influencing its variability. Field data and daily MODIS satellite data were used to determine the diversity of plume distribution. Salinity, temperature and density data were taken using multiparameter YSI apparatus, chlorophyll-a concentration was determined using Aqua fluorometer and suspended particulate matter was measured by gravimetric method analysis. The plume's spatial distribution from field data was plotted using ArcGIS v10 while Marine Explorer v4 was used to determine its vertical distribution. Daily MODIS data were processed using SeaDAS v6.4, ArcGIS v10 and ERDAS v11 software to produce chlorophyll-a and nlw555 (suspended particulate matter) surface distribution map. The result from field data shows a northeast spreading plume in April due to the southward geostrophic current at the end of the station that diverted it. The northeast spreading plume in October intermonsoon was effected by the strong northeast wind direction and magnitude and it reaches 5m depth. The plume propagated northeastward during Southwest monsoon with less than 5m plume penetration. During Northeast monsoon, the plume propagated partially northeast and southward with more than 5m depth due to the geostrophic current near the river mouth region. Plume surface distribution using satellite data showed corresponding result of wind direction with plume distribution in each monsoon. Determination of plume's distribution from field and satellite data produces a similar pattern. The results concluded that variability of Pahang River plume was dependent on geostrophic current and wind factor. Information and understanding on seasonal change of plume is significant in terms of management and fisheries at the coast as plume can affect the productivity of marine organism at the area.,Master
