Description: The variability in magnitudes of the panicle component traits between seven rice varieties, IR64, IR73895-33-1-3-2, MR270, MR272, MR276, MRQ86 and SPD184 were studied. The components are number of primary branch, panicle length, total spikelet, number of filled grain/panicle, 1000 grain weight and panicle weight. MR276 has the highest magnitudes for most component traits, with the highest number of primary branch/panicle (13.04), panicle length (28.09 cm), number of spikelet/panicle (246.13), number of filled grain/panicle (205.77) and panicle weight (8.77 g), followed by IR73895-33-1-3-2. Varieties SPD184, MRQ86 and IR64 did not show comparable magnitudes as MR276, but have unique features such as aromatic and larger grain size. The heritability estimates based on ANOVA variances were high (>90%). Correlation analyses showed positive relationship between the various panicle traits and panicle weight. The F2 populations of three crosses, IR64 X MR276, MR276 X SPD184 and MRQ86 X IR73895-33-1-3-2 and their parents were evaluated in the field. The highest panicle weight was observed on MR276, followed by IR73895-33-1-3-2, SPD184, MRQ86 and IR64. The expression of panicle weight phenotype was controlled by large number of additive genes, and a smaller number of genes controlling other traits (< 6 genes). The heritability value for panicle weight as estimated by using the variance of F2 population was low, but moderate for the percentage of filled grains or number of primary branches/panicle. The performance of top 10% F2 individuals with the highest panicle weight from the three crosses showed that their weight were higher than the mean of their F2 populations, without any transgressive plant observed. However, transgressive individuals were observed from the F2 of MRQ86 X IR73895-33-1-3-2 for the number of primary branch/panicle (75%) and the number of filled grain/panicle (100%). Genetic advance values for panicle weight at 5% selection intensity of IR64 X MR276 were 0.16g/panicle as compared to 0.07g/panicle for MRQ86 X IR73895-33-1-3-2. The selected F2 progenies from both populations were proposed for further generation advancement to produce a unique, better high yielding progenies.,Master/Sarjana
