dc.description | The rapid industrialization and urbanization of an area requires quick preparation of actual land use and land cover (LULC) maps in order to detect and avoid overuse and damage of the landscape beyond sustainable development limits. Remote sensing technology fits well for long-term monitoring and assessment of such effects. The Sidon city is a fast growing region. Therefore, monitoring land changes is an important issue in landscape planning and resource management. The aim of this study is to analyze the LULC changes, the driving factors and impacts, and the urban expansion in Sidon City, Lebanon throughout the years from 1985 until 2015, using satellite images, GIS techniques and landscape metric model. The applied methods consist of three major components: remote sensing-based LULC classification, GIS-based LULC change analysis and landscape metric modelling to predict future LULC scenarios. Seven classes have been detected for evaluating and quantifying the land cover changes for each class within the time frame series from 1985 and 2015. The final results in this research study shows the urban development across the city throughout the years. Urban expansion and built up areas were clearly detected. Also results shows the agricultural land changes where some crops dominate others in some areas and some has been completely transformed to built-up areas. The significance of this study is to show the usefulness of integrating remote sensing with GIS and landscape metrics in land change analysis that allows for better characterization of spatial patterns and helps reveal the underlying processes of urban land changes. Thus analyzing and modelling the LULC changes in Sidon city is certainly beneficial for land-use planners and decision makers.,Master of Philosophy | |
