| dc.description | Generally this study discuses the waste recycling situation in Kuala Langat and Sepang districts of Selangor. The first objective is to found out the state of waste recycling activities in these districts. Secondly, the challenges face by the people and to identify barriers. Thirdly, to analysis the roles of the informal sector (scavengers). Lastly, to investigate how private waste operators could be encouraged in recycling business and to identity the problems they encounter in their daily business activities. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study. Data was collected via questionnaire, with 100 samples purposively chosen. 60 samples were chosen from Kuala Langat and 40 from Sepang respectively. Interviews were held with officials of Kuala Langat and Sepang districts, Alam Flora official at Cyberjaya, private waste operators and an informal sector. Findings have shown that recycling is an important economic activity, profitable and plays an important role in waste management system in these areas. In order to improve the recycling and waste management activities in the areas, the results show that more than 60% of the respondents agreed that there is need for community involvement in recycling policy formation that affects them. 80% of the respondents also accepted that there is need for preschool education on recycling, while more than 60% of the participants said there is no adequate information on recycling. 71% agreed that recycling centre should be located near residential areas. According to the private waste operators, corruptions are still endemic at districts level when it comes to legalizing waste operators business. As a result of this many are operating illegally. They also want a reduction of fees charge for disposing of waste residue in the districts. The main motive for recycling here is that of economy and not for ecological reasons. The roles of the informal sectors (scavengers) are not recognized as they help to reduce the amount of waste to be deposited into landfills, thereby reducing cost for the district councils.
