Discourse on identity is often shaped by different social environments due to historical factors and the diaspora as well as changes in the social structure and social processes. Therefore, the objective of this study is to understand how Hazara youth define the concept of Hazara identity and see their identity in Afghanistan. Ethnic Hazara is the third largest nationality in Afghanistan and mainly live in the centre of the country, Hazarajat. The Hazara ethnic group was chosen in this study because the migration rate among the Hazara youth is very high compared with other ethnic groups in Afghanistan. A total of twenty eight informants were interviewed using in-depth interview technique. The data was transcribed and translated from Dari (Persian) language to English and thematic analysis was implemented. At the same time, the data were openly, axially, and selectively coded. The findings show that the majority of the informants believed that the Hazara identity should be defined using their language, pedigree, name, culture, belief and facial features. At the same time, Islam has an important role in shaping the Hazara identity. The findings also suggest that there are no significant differences of views among male and female Hazara youth on ethnic identity. The implication of this study is that the concept of ethnic identity must be considered in establishing the identity of the country and also in inter-ethnic unity.,Master of Philosophy
