dc.descriptionGood visual acuity is important for children's learning but the actual visual acuity demands of classrooms are poorly understood. The objective of this study was to calculate the VA demands for 61 Klang Valley primary schools classrooms, from 8 primary schools (4 SKs, 2 SKCs and 2 SKTs) and compare the calculated VA demands between levels of study (31 Tahap 1 classrooms and 30 Tahap 2 classrooms) and types of schools. This study was divided into 2 phases. For Phase 1, the measurements conducted in each of the classroom were classroom dimensions (length x width), maximum distance a student is seated from the whiteboard and the minimum vertical height of the distance and near target. A pilot study was conducted to determine the near working distance, hence 28cm was used. Distance and near visual acuity (VA) demand were then calculated. Overall distance and near VA demand was 0.10 logMAR ± 0.03 logMAR, and 0.24 ± 0.01 logMAR respectively. The distance and near VA demand for Tahap 1 was 0.11 ± 0.26 logMAR and 0.24 ± 0.10 logMAR. Distance and near VA demand for Tahap 2 was 0.09 ± 0.20 logMAR and 0.24 ± 0.09 logMAR. The VA demands at distance and near were not significantly different between both levels (p > 0.05). The distance and near VA demand for SK schools were 0.24 ± 0.17 logMAR and 0.31 ± 0.04 logMAR , SKC were 0.16 ± 0.11 logMAR and 0.13 ± 0.03 logMAR, SKT were 0.09 ± 0.10 logMAR and 0.12 ± 0.03 logMAR respectively. There were significant differences for both distance and near VA demand between the types of schools, H = 37.587, df = 2, N = 61, p = 0.000 and H = 44.798, df = 2, N = 61, p = 0.000. Phase 2 was to determine the percentage of students that met the VA demand determined from Phase 1. One hundred and sixty-six students from both Tahap 1 and Tahap 2 were randomly selected from SK, SKC and SKT schools. They were screened for VA. Results showed that 78.3% of the students have distance VA of 0.10 logMAR and better and 94% had near VA of 0.24 logMAR or better. The study shows that relatively high levels of visual acuity demand for distance and near are required to meet the requirements of modern classroom environments. These findings provide an evidence base to inform prescribing guidelines and develop paediatric vision screening protocols and referral criteria.,Ijazah Sarjana Sains Kesihatan (Optometri)-
