dc.description | In this present modern digital era, the world of reading and writing has changed from monomodal text to multimodal text. However, the method of teaching and learning English as a second language is still the same as before where the materials used is still predominantly based on monomodal text. Thus, the researcher conducted the study among 90 in-service TESL teachers who have enrolled in the course, “Current Trends in Language Teaching” where their objective is to develop a graphic oral history workbook based on the oral history text. This study employed a case study design with a mixed method approach in order to put two types of data together to provide more insight and understanding of this study. The data was collected using the in-service teachers’ personal reflective writing, evaluation written report and document analysis where it was then analysed using a thematic analysis. This mixed method study was further supported with a data from a questionnaire, which were later descriptively analysed using frequency, and percentage. The main findings indicated that in-service TESL teachers have acquired significant experience in seven aspects of material development which are content, reading, culture, language, graphics, lesson plan, and activities while developing their own graphic oral history workbook. Besides, the oral history text that they have created also has its own novelty whereby the value of cultural elements was incorporated when developing the oral history text. Moreover, it showed that the main criteria considered by in-service TESL teachers when developing and evaluating the workbook are oral history text, graphic novel, lesson plan and activities. It is hoped that the findings will encourage and motivate TESL teachers to develop their own teaching materials for their own students as well as considering to use Malaysian own authentic material for teaching and learning in ESL classrooms.,Master in Education | |
