Listening is one of the important skills in language learning. It is a critical skill that needs to be acquired in second language learning. Despite its importance, it is always neglected in the classroom. In Malaysia, the integration of listening in the standardized national examination only started in 2014 in Form Three Assessment (PT3). However, not only it is being less emphasized in the classroom, research in this area are also limited, despite the fact that PT3 has been implemented for 7 years. Therefore, investigating teachers’ beliefs is one of the most important aspects in teachers’development. Thus, this study aims to examine teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices in teaching listening comprehension for lower secondary English teachers. This is because many teachers are unsure on how to teach listening skills effectively. This study uses the quantitative approach to identify teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices in teaching listening comprehension. It further seeks the correlation between the two variables. It also examines if there is any difference in regards to their beliefs and teaching practices between novice and experienced teachers. This research adopts Krashen Second Language Acquisition Theory, Socio Constructivism theory and Danielson Framework for Teaching in explaining both variables in the teaching of listening skills. Items from this questionnaire were adapted from three sources which are Gleason (1993), Choi (1999) and Graham et al. (2014). There are 2 parts in the questionnaire with 19 items for each part. The questionnaire set was distributed to 170 teachers in four districts in Tawau division, Sabah, and 124 questionnaires were returned. The data were analysed using the SPSS software version 23. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse frequency, mean score and standard deviation. On the other hand, inferential analysis was used to analyse the correlation between beliefs and teaching practices by using Pearson Correlation. Inferential analysis was also used to compare the difference between novice and experienced teachers with respect to their teaching beliefs and teaching practices by using an independent sample t-test. The study revealed that most teachers believe that pupils’ difficulty in learning listening is due to their lack of vocabulary. It was also found that teachers frequently prepare specific learning objectives to accomplish during listening lessons. As for the correlation between teachers’ beliefs and their teaching practices, the result shows a significant relationship between the two variables, with a strong size of correlation value. The analysis also shows no significant difference between novice and experienced teachers with regards to their beliefs and teaching practice. This study helps teachers to improve their teaching practices. Besides that, it provides an insight towards the trainings that need to be carried out in order to change teachers’ perspectives from the aspect of beliefs and teaching practices. The results of this study are pertinent to the adoption of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) into English curriculum as teachers need to improve their pedagogical knowledge in teaching, especially in the teaching of listening skills.,Master of Education
