dc.descriptionThe rapid growth of NNS teachers in the field of English as a second or a foreign language (ESL/EFL) indicates the importance and acceptance of the public to NNS teachers alongside with NS teachers in the teaching of English language. With such a view, it is essential to consider the role of native speakers (NS) of English teachers towards non-native speaker teachers (NNS) especially in a multicultural and multilingual society. In many countries around the world, the employment of NS teachers are widely being applied as much as the local NNS teachers. This descriptive survey study aims to identify perceptions of 106 NNS teachers towards NS teaching assistants in improving students’ proficiency in ESL learning at Malaysian secondary schools. The study also identified the perceptions of NNS teachers towards the effectiveness of NS teachers’ role in improving NNS teachers’ teaching of English. Another aim in this study is to examine the perceptions of NNS teachers towards the differences in teaching method used by NS and NNS teachers in Malaysian secondary schools. The subject were identified through non-probability sampling. A 5-item Likert-type questionnaire was used to answer the perceptions of NNS teachers have towards NS teachers in terms of improving students’ proficiency, effectiveness and differences in teaching method in ESL learning. Semi-structured interviews were employed on 5 NNS teachers to gather information on their teaching practices and opinions towards NS teachers in their schools. Descriptive statistics were used including percentages and frequency. The data showed that the NNS teachers have positive perceptions towards the employment of NS teachers in Malaysian schools. They viewed that NS teachers become the model of the target language learnt and that NS are the ideal person to teach pronunciation and speaking skills. The result also showed that there is a positive relationship in the collaboration between NS and NNS teachers in the teaching of English in class. The result of the interviews depicted that NNS teachers are comfortable and were positive with the assistance from the NS especially in achieving students’ communicative competence. The NS teachers were preferred too when assisting students in developing their self-confidence. One implication of the study is NNS teachers should be encouraged and supported to develop their proficiency and mastery in the target language. Trainings and courses should be held to improve NNS teachers’ mastery to become competent teachers in ESL classrooms.,Master of Education
