This study aims to determine changes in the self-esteem and anxiety levels of female university students in relation to their swimming ability. The results of the study were obtained from 74 female university students enrolled at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Breaststroke was used in order to evaluate their swimming skills. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to evaluate the respondent’s self-esteem levels for subjects. The anxiety level was evaluated by Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The result confirmed a statistically significant increase in self-esteem of pre-test (Mean = 28.19) to self-esteem of post-test (Mean = 30.12), t (68) = −2.75, p= 0.00. As for anxiety, there was a significant reduction of pre-test (Mean = 39.62) to anxiety of post-test (Mean = 34.00), t (68) = 4.72, p= 0.00. According to the results of this study, swimming ability increases self-esteem and decreases anxiety level among female university students. As a conclusion, a systematic and proper intervention program helps to increase self-esteem and decrease anxiety level among students.,Master of Philosophy
