Description: | mental fatigue, location for physical activities, and many more. Furthermore, green spaces have the therapeutic and healing potential for their users, especially in a stressful and hectic environment of a hospital. However, a hospital's public green spaces are often overlooked as a secondary space in architecture, thus, its full potential as a healing environment for its users is not fully investigated. There is no significant research conducted on the effects of public green spaces in hospitals as a healing environment towards patient's healing. Additionally, there is a minimal study on the measurement of human behaviours and the level of healing in the public green spaces of hospital outdoor design. There is also a need to explore the architecture and landscape design criteria elements of outdoor green spaces in hospitals. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of public green spaces on users’ perception toward healing. Two research methods are used in this research including qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative research approach was conducted via reviewing the Evidence-Based Design (EBD) theory to evaluate the environment that is designed to maximize healing through scientific empirical evidence of its practice, conducted an observation and comparative analysis of the specific design domain that affords healing through its design criteria. Quantitative approach was conducted using data collection technique via the distribution of 600 Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) survey questionnaire to the users of the public green spaces in 4 hospitals located in Klang Valley area. From these, 450 questionnaires were returned, with 384 questionnaires deemed valid for statistical analysis. For the analysis, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for descriptive analysis (mean and standard deviation) and a Smart-PLs software was used to perform the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to evaluate both measurement models (Reliability and Validity value) and structural model (Multi Collinearity, Path Coefficients and Coefficient of Determination) for this study. The findings show that the public green space in hospital design is effective towards patient healing. The green spaces’ design criteria (6 Architectural elements and 6 Landscape element) is effective and has a positive significant effect on its user’s health towards healing. This study contributes to the improvement of hospital design effectiveness via its outdoor public green spaces design criteria elements that strategize on its user's healing.,Master of Science |
