Description: | In UKM, bus service is the main means of transportation. Therefore, it is important that the campus bus service system is efficient in order to serve the needs of passengers who are mainly university students. In order to enhance the efficiency of the bus transportation service and reduce the students’ waiting time for a bus, a system that only tracks the bus using GPS is not reliable enough. A more reliable bus monitoring and identification system is needed, and it can simultaneously identify the bus and track its movements. As such, the main objective of this research is to develop an intelligent bus monitoring and identification system for a more efficient management of the existing bus service system. In this research, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Geographical Information System (GIS) together with the integrated communication technologies of Global Positioning System (GPS) and General Packet Radio Services (GPRS), are used to develop the proposed intelligent bus monitoring and identification system. In order to achieve this, a new theoretical framework of the proposed system is first developed. Then, the actual system, which consists of both hardware and software, is developed. The system hardware comprises of RFID for bus identification as the main focus of this study, GPS as the tracking device, and GPRS as the data communicator. The use of GPS technology allows the system to track the bus movement continuously. As for the software, VB.NET programming language is used to develop a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which interfaces the GIS with the integrated hardware devices. Basically, there are two processes that take place in the system: data acquisition and data utilization. During the data acquisition process, data obtained from the RFID reader and GPS are saved in an online database via GPRS and transmitted to the authorities at the monitoring center; whereas during the data utilization process, data received from the bus is processed and then displayed on the GIS. The processed data include the plate number of the bus, its time of arrival at the bus stop, the personal information of the bus driver who is on duty, and the locations of bus and the bus stops in which the bus has made its stop. All these information data are made available via GIS which enable the authorities to visualize and manage the bus system easily. For instance, whenever the system classifies the bus as delayed, the bus authority can find out the cause of the delay. Next, corrective action can be implemented to overcome the problem. The system prototype is installed on a campus bus, and five bus stops were selected to test the compatibility between RFID as the bus identifier and GIS as the mapping tool. From the tests carried out, it was determined that the RFID devices were able to interact with each other and immediately acquired the data whenever the bus entered the bus stop’s vicinity. The acquired information is quickly and efficiently sent to the monitoring center, enabling the authorities to view it via GIS. For an easy analysis, a graph of the bus’s actual arrival time against the estimated arrival time is projected. It can be concluded that the use of RFID, GIS, GPS, and GPRS in the system is appropriate to develop an efficient bus monitoring and identification system to help improve the efficiency of the campus bus system in UKM.,Master of Science,Certification of Master's / Doctoral Thesis" is not available" |
