Description: | In building renovation, service load capacity of floors often needs to be increased to accommodate a change in functionality. For this purpose, carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) is a widely used as strengthening material that is easily obtained. In upgrading or strengthening a continuous composite slab, attention should be given to the critical area in the hogging region of the concrete slab. However, recommendations for strengthening systems using CFRP in the hogging moment region of a profiled steel decking composite floor are not available in the literature. Thus, this study mainly aims to investigate the structural behaviour of continuous profiled steel composite slab (CPSCS) strengthened by CFRP laminate in the hogging moment region. Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to retrieve information such as failure mode, load-deflection curve behaviour, load-end-slip curve behaviour and hogging moment capacity of the strengthened CPSCS. A total of six specimens of the CPSCS were tested experimentally under five-point loading. Three specimens were restrained and strengthened with different lengths of CFRP (1.7, 1.4 and 1 m), and one specimen was unstrengthened. Headed shear studs were used as intermediate support in the restrained CPSCS specimens. Another two specimens were unrestrained to allow a slip between the concrete slab and profile steel sheet. One specimen was strengthened with 1 m length of CFRP and the second was unstrengthened. In the unstrengthened CPSCS, specimens were used as control. Finite element (FE) software package ANSYS was applied to analyse the effect of parameters such as floor thickness, concrete strength and number of CFRPs on the strengthened CPSCS. The FE model was verified against the experimental results and shows a good accuracy. The experimental results indicated that providing the CFRP in the hogging region of CPSCS improved the moment capacity by as much as 32% in the restrained and unrestrained CPSCS. The CPSCS strengthened with longer CFRP (1.7 m) and bonded beyond the hogging moment region achieved the highest improvement in hogging moment capacity. All specimens were failed due to delamination of CFRP. In terms of energy absorption value, the continuous composite slab that was strengthened with 1.7 m of CFRP laminate exhibited the highest value, which was approximately 50% higher than the value of the control specimen. Moreover, the results numerically showed that the hogging moment capacity of the strengthened CPSCS increased with the increase of floor thickness and concrete strength. However, moment improvement ratio was reduced with the increase in slab thickness and concrete strength. The increment in hogging moment resistance is found to be prominent on the thin slab and lower concrete strength.,Master of Science |
