dc.description | In Malaysian university campuses, increasing dependence on the use of cars and sedentary lifestyle have resulted in growing traffic congestion, more demand for parking, air pollution, negative impact on health and many others. Therefore, many studies have been done to fulfill the requirement for sustainability in university campuses. “Green Transportation” likes walking needs to be a way to acquire sustainability in university campuses. Furthermore, walking is a physical activity that is healthy. Due to these purposes, there is a need to improve walking as a meaning of travelling. The objective of this study is to investigate the quality of pedestrian environment around the campus to improve walking. The study area is the second zone of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Bangi campus. Most of the earlier studies on walking try to identify which parameters of the built environment affect walking or physical activities. In this study, these parameters have been categorized into four criteria which include connectivity, accessibility, comfort and aesthetics, and safety. The methodology comprises of the use of questionnaire, case study and benchmarking. The benchmarking is done against three Singaporean universities (National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technology University, and Republic Polytechnics University) and one university in Malaysia (University Technology Petronas). The methods of collecting data are qualitative and quantitative. This is illustrated through the use of survey, site observation, Google earth, map drawing and benchmarking. For analysis of the questionnaire, ‘Statistical Package for the Social Sciences’ software was used (SPSS version 18.0). Observations were done on the study area to investigate the existing condition of the study area and to propose new ideas from top selected universities to overcome the problems in the study area. The physical evaluation was done based on the four criteria explained earlier. Analyzing data for onsite observation was done through descriptive statistics and in some parts through quantitative analysis. The results show that a high percentage of the students are not satisfied and complain about the existing condition. Furthermore, according to the onsite physical evaluation, there are problems in exciting condition and designing built environment of study area. Consequently, four main solutions to improve the walking condition in the second zone of UKM campus and to enhance the criteria of the built environment design are suggested. It is important to consider walking parameters in the design as primary priority and increase walking activity by making the built environment more accessible, connected, safe and comfortable (enjoyable).,Certification of Master's / Doctoral Thesis" is not available | - |
