GMA can capture morphologically distinct shape variables and allow the shape of craniofacial bone to be analyzed statistically. This study aims to determine the shape variation of mandibular symphysis (MS) between adolescents and adults. Pretreatment lateral cephalometric radiographs of 254 patients aged between 11-40 years old, with Class III skeletal base (ANB <1o) and lower incisor angle (<99o) were included. The sample was divided into adolescence, emerging adulthood, and adulthood based on gonial angle (>130o as high angle, 120o-130o as average angle and <120o as low angle). Nine-landmarks with x and y coordinates were identified on MS, using TPSDig2 software, then exported into Morpho J for shape and statistical analysis. The general shape of the MS ranged from tall and narrow with inferior position B-point to short and wide, with superior position B-point. The basal part ranged from either narrow, elongated, and oval-shaped to wide, short, and bulbousshaped. High gonial angle group has a significantly narrower and elongated MS and the low gonial angle group has a wider and shorter, bulbous basal part of MS (p<0.0001). Male had significantly taller MS with narrower B point area compared to female (p<0.006). Retroclined incisors exhibit taller and upright alveolar part of MS (p<0.0001). Adults in the high gonial angle group (p=0.0003) and average gonial angle groups (p<0.0001) had significantly narrower mandibular symphysis especially at the B-point and basal area compared to adolescents. In conclusion, the shape of mandibular symphysis in Class III skeletal base is influenced by individual variation, gonial angle, age groups, gender and incisor inclination. Hence, understanding the shape variation of mandibular symphysis especially in adults with high gonial angle is important during orthodontic treatment planning to avoid unwanted complications,Ijazah Doktor Pergigian Klinikal (Ortodontik)
