Components of fixed orthodontic appliance create a favourable environment for plaque accumulation leading to dental diseases such as caries and gingivitis. Therefore, oral hygiene instruction (OHI) is necessary for immaculate cleaning behaviour throughout the treatment duration. Advice to patients may include verbal, written, video or computer-based platforms. An online learning system, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), provides high-quality educational material and twoway communication between learners and instructors. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of MOOC compared to the conventional chair-side instruction (control) in fixed orthodontic patients. The knowledge retention and oral health status were assessed between both groups. 60 subjects were recruited in this randomized control trial and were divided equally to two groups. The oral health questionnaire was used to test knowledge retention at baseline (T0), immediately after bond up (T1), 1 month (T2), 3 months (T3) and 6 months (T4). Oral health assessments were done at baseline, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. The results showed that the knowledge retention scores were significantly higher in the MOOC group (mean rank = 34.03; 34.23) as compared to the control group (mean rank = 26.97; 26.77) at T1 and T2 (p<0.05). The oral health scores were significantly lower in the MOOC group as compared to control group (p<0.05) at 1st month for plaque score (mean rank = 26.03; 34.97) and bleeding score (mean rank = 26.20; 34.80). Thus, the use of an interactive web-based platform such as MOOC can be a better alternative to provide oral health knowledge to patients undergoing fixed appliance treatment specifically in the first month of treatment,Ijazah Sarjana Doktor Pergigian Klinikal (Ortodontik)
