Description: | There is an increasing demand from adult patients for orthodontic treatment and they are most likely to experienced periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment may affect the equilibrium of oral microbiota especially subgingival bacteria which play a major role in aetiology of periodontal disease. However, there is no study assessing the clinical and microbiological profile of stabilized periodontal patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Thus, this research aims to assess the periodontal tissue using 3 clinical indices and microbiological changes of aerobes, anaerobes, black pigmented bacteria (BPB) and Agregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) during 6 months in periodontal-healthy patients and stabilised- periodontal patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliance. For this purposes, upper and lower fixed orthodontic appliances were bonded on patients which were divided into periodontal-healthy group and stabilisedperiodontal group. Plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD) were measured and 34 subgingival sites of each group were taken for subgingival plaque sampling using a sterile Gracey’s curette before bonding (T0), 1 week (T1), 1 month (T2), 3 months and 6 months post-bonding (T4). Plaque samples were inoculated on Trypticase Soy Blood Agar (TSBA) and Trypticase Soy Bacitracin Vancomycin (TSBV) agar. The results found that PI and BOP were significantly higher in periodontal-healthy group than stabilised-periodontal group 6 months post-bonding. Meanwhile, aerobe was significantly reduced and anaerobe was significantly increased 6 months post-bonding in both groups. Minimal number of BPB was detected throughout this study but in stabilised periodontal group they were significantly increased after 1 week and 1 month. Aa was found significantly reduced in periodontal-healthy group whilst significantly increased in stabilised-periodontal group 6 months post-bonding. In conclusion, there were no significant changes in periodontal tissue clinically but there were significant changes in aerobe, anaerobe, BPB and Aa in stabilised-periodontal group during the first 6-months of orthodontic treatment.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available |
