Description: The Union of Maghreb Arab (UMA) was established in 1989 to promote economic and financial development in the North African Arab countries. However, North African banks still suffer from high levels of non-performing loans and inefficient financial intermediation. Most of the banks in this region are controlled by central government where foreign banks have entry barriers and financial liberalization does not occur in most financial sectors. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the level of bank technical efficiency, productivity and its determinants in UMA countries namely; Libya, Tunisia and Algeria using a sample of 18 commercial banks for the period of 2002-2009. The aim of this study is: first; to compare the efficiency level of Libyan, Tunisian and Algerian banks using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Second; to compare the productivity of the banks of the three countries. Third; to examine the determinants of efficiency and productivity of Libyan, Tunisian and Algerian banks using panel data analysis models. The results indicate that significant differences exist in efficiency and productivity levels of banks operating in union of Maghreb Arab. The findings further show that total factor productivity has been continuously improved over the period of study except in the case of Algerian banks. Algerian banks experienced deterioration of efficiency and total factor productivity in certain years. The findings suggest that bank efficiency and productivity have potential in facilitating the development of UMA. Finally, GDP per capita and bank capital are expected to influence the efficiency and productivity of UMA banks. We also note that the Libyan banking system which is of Italian legal origin has helped banks to be more efficient and have higher productivity growth.,Master/Sarjana
