dc.description | This study begins with an overview of eco-tourism and explains why it is the fastest growing and potentially most attractive source of foreign exchange among the developed and developing countries in the world. It then moves from the general to the particular and discusses the state of tourism in Malaysia, notes the fortunate geographical location of one of the most successful nations in Southeast Asia, skirting the potentially damaging 'Ring of Fire' that touches Indonesia and the Philippines among the ASEAN countries, with earthquakes and volcanoes. The major tourist attractions of Malaysia, east and west are discussed, followed by specific discussion of eco-tourism in the context of Malaysia in general and Sarawak in particular, especially the two geological and archaeological wonders of the Mulu and Niah Caves and their accompanying National Parks near the city of Miri in the northwest of Sarawak, Malaysia largest state, located on the exotic island of Borneo. The various key aspects of successful tourism in general and eco-tourism in particular are then discussed in detail, including the nature of the tourism industry, the key tourism industry players like travel agents and tour and transport operators (airlines, taxi and bus companies, ferry and express boat services), hoteliers as well as the various communities in the vicinity of the tourism sites that offer related services on the ground, and homestays, and related towns and cities that act as jumping off points or gateways to tourism destinations. Also highlighted is the important role played by the government of Malaysia in the development of infrastructure and tourism promotion both domestically and internationally while statistics are provided on national tourist arrivals to Malaysia as well as visitor traffic to Sarawak. In the penultimate Chapter 4, the importance of Mulu and Niah are highlighted as the crown jewels of Sarawak and in fact Malaysian eco-tourism while the role played by the City of Miri as the Northern Gateway and the jumping off point for tourists to Mulu and Niah is emphasized. The thesis concludes with a review of the major points discussed and makes recommendations for the further development of Mulu and Niah as premier eco-tourism magnet for Malaysia.,Kajian ini bermula dengan suatu gambaran keseluruhan mengenai eko-pelancongan dan menerangkan mengapa ia merupakan sumber pertukaran wang asing yang paling pesat dan berpotensi paling menarik di kalangan negara-negara yang membangun dan yang telah membangun di dunia.
