Description: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, as a national university has realised this critical health issue in the management of children with hearing loss. Back in the late 1980s, Malaysia had a shortage of ENT surgeons and more critical was the shortage of audiologists and speech language pathologists. There were only a handful of audiologists and speech language pathologists to serve the whole population. It is a universitys role to assist in meeting that shortfall and we did what was necessary. In 1984 UKM started the Masters of ORL - Head and Neck Surgery, the first programme in Malaysia to produce ENT specialists for the country. Then in 1991, UKM was also the first university in Malaysia to conduct the Bachelor of Audiology and Bachelor of Speech Sciences, to train professional audiologists and speech language pathologists. To date I was made to understand that we have produced around 200 audiologists and almost the same number of speech language pathologists working as a team all over the country as well as a few who were also serving in various clinics in our neighbouring countries. Being a national university, we are proud of this achievement and our contribution to the nation.
