Editors: Arnold, T.W.

Doctrine

Notes: The orthodox reaction against the Mu'tazilah was so successful in destroying the literature of this sect, that the historian has hitherto bad to depend for his knowledge of their history and doctrines on the writings of authors who looked upon them as heretics and consequently wrote of them in an unsympathetic spirit. The author of the pre- sent account, however, belonged to a sect,-the Zaydiyah,- the founder of which, Zayd b. 'Ali, had learned of Wasil and had adopted the Mu'tazilah doctrines. Accordingly the Mu'tazilah are here represented as orthodox; and the author having had access to several Mu'tazilah books that have not come down to us, provides us with some valuable additions to our knowledge of this sect. The author of the work from which the following ex- tract is taken was one of the most learned of the Zaydiyah Imams, by name Al Mahdi lidín Aḥmad b, Yahya b. al Murtada. Born in A. H. 764, he was proclaimed Imam A. H. 793, but in the subsequent year was deposed and cast into prison in San'a, where he remained in captivity till A. H. 801, He died of the plague in 840. He was a voluminous writer, and among the works that issued from his pen was a full exposition of Zaydiyah law, entitled. He claims for it that it will impart to any one who thoroughly masters its contents, all the knowledge he requires to become a Mujtahid.
